Finding Artist Residency of Your Dreams

Chances are that if you are an artist, you have wondered about artist residencies at one point or another. But where do you even begin to figure out which residency is for you, what to look for, and what is the standard bare minimum?

If you are looking for a directory or database of residency listings, visit Res Artis resartis.org which is a worldwide network of arts residencies where you can filter out opportunities by your needs.

  1. What are the costs and is funding available?

  2. Can you bring guests or family?

  3. Are rooms and bathrooms shared or private?

  4. Are meals included? Who is in charge of cooking?

  5. What do studio spaces look like and what’s the availability? Do you need internet connection?

  6. What’s the programming and the schedule like or is the residency self-led?

  7. How long does the residency last?

Additional things you might want to consider:

  • location and amenities

  • attending artists reviews

  • studio tools and art stores nearby

  • shipping your artworks

The truth is, every artist residency is different and that’s why it’s important to do some research to figure out what suits you based on your personal needs. Many artists reached out to me personally to inquire about how the residency benefited me, but the answer is so subjective as everyone’s needs and expectations are different.
